Descriptive Features: A Cornell University-bred selection released from the Geneva, New York breeding station in 1983, developed from parentage that includes McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Antonovka, and the scab-resistant crabapple Malus floribunda — giving it a double dose of genetic scab resistance and, appropriately, its name: "freedom" from that affliction. Forms a vigorous, spreading tree with fragrant white to pink spring blossoms and medium-to-large, bright red apples over a nearly hidden yellow background, ripening in mid-to-late season (around late September to mid-October). The flesh is firm, crisp, and juicy with a sweet, sprightly flavor, excellent for fresh eating, cider, juicing, baking, and sauce, and stores well for one to three months. Highly resistant to apple scab and moderately resistant to fire blight, cedar apple rust, canker, and powdery mildew, making it a strong choice for organic and low-spray home orchards. Precocious and productive, typically bearing within 2–4 years of planting. Requires a different apple variety nearby with an overlapping bloom period for cross-pollination. Best in full sun with average to moist, well-drained soil.
