Latin Name: Sedum telephium 'After Dark'
Common Name: After Dark Stonecrop
Zones: 3–9
Height & Spread: 18–20 inches tall, spreading 24–28 inches wide
Descriptive Features: A compact, dramatic upright sedum prized for its deep purple foliage that reads nearly black in full sun, deepening further as the season progresses. Sturdy, stout stems form a substantial clump of succulent leaves that can stand in for a small shrub in the landscape. In late summer to early fall, clusters of black buds open into vibrant garnet-red flowers that create striking contrast against the dark foliage, intensifying in color with more sun exposure. Dried seed heads persist through fall and winter, offering continued visual interest and a food source for birds if left standing. Extremely drought-tolerant and best sited in poor to average, well-drained soil — rich soil results in lankier, less compact growth. Attracts bees and butterflies; deer- and rabbit-resistant. An excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, containers, or cut flower and dried arrangements in full sun.
