Latin Name: Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Gracilis’
Common Name: Dwarf Gracilis Hinoki Cypress / Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress
Zones: 4-8
Height & Spread: 3-6 feet tall (eventually to 6 feet or more), spreading 2-4 feet wide
Descriptive Features: One of the most popular dwarf conifers and a Plant of Merit, a slow-growing evergreen with rich, dark green, shell-like sprays of foliage that are arranged in small, curved fans and give the plant an almost sculptural texture. Young plants are irregular, rounded, and dense, and they become more broadly conical to pyramidal with age, adding only about 3-4 feet in the first 10 years. The glossy foliage holds its dark green color through winter and has a pleasant fragrance. The name hinoki means “tree of the sun” in Japanese, and the plant is a favorite in Japanese-inspired gardens and bonsai. Best in full sun to part shade in average, moist, well-drained soil, with a layer of bark mulch to keep roots cool in summer. Protect from harsh winter winds and drying conditions. It needs little pruning other than removing any dieback. Low-maintenance and generally free of pests and diseases. An excellent choice as a specimen, accent, foundation plant, or in rock gardens, borders, containers, and Asian-style landscapes in full sun to part shade.
