Latin Name: Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head'

Common Name: Red Head Fountain Grass

Zones: 5–9

Height & Spread: 3–4 feet tall, spreading 3–4 feet wide

Descriptive Features: A robust, statuesque fountain grass valued for its exceptionally large, showy flower spikes — among the biggest of any Pennisetum cultivar. Forms a substantial, upright, arching mound of coarse green foliage that provides bold texture and structure through the growing season. From late summer into fall, thick, fuzzy, dark reddish-purple to burgundy bottlebrush plumes rise dramatically above the foliage, creating a striking, richly colored display that ages to a warm tan as the season progresses, and persists as attractive seed heads well into winter if left standing, offering food and shelter for birds. Foliage turns warm gold and copper tones in fall before fading to tan. Extremely low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established, adaptable to a wide range of soils. Deer-resistant, needing only a late-winter cutback before new growth resumes. Its bold scale and dramatic plumes make it an excellent choice as a specimen, accent, or anchor for mass plantings and mixed borders in full sun to light shade.
